Gothic Rock

From the Swedish spectres that brought you Children of the Night, one of the best albums of 2015, comes a truly triumphant masterpiece that further cements the Gothic rockers in the annals of metal history. Skillfully channeling their affection for the dark and macabre, Tribulation has crafted Down Below, an album that is a twisted delight to listen to and sets the standard for what a stellar album should be in 2018.

After four years of silence, MGMT has returned to the music scene with their newest song, "Little Dark Age." For those who may have been worrying about the band losing their touch, I can honestly say that there is nothing to worry about. MGMT revives their signature style, which proves to have stood the test of time, to create an atmosphere that's dark, moody, and dramatic; but it is nothing less than brilliant. The song opens with gentle, plucky synths that sound playful, and sparks the curiosity of listeners.

The beauty that is Chelsea Wolfe's music is extremely hard to categorize. Her earlier albums such as The Grime and the Glow and Apokalypsis flirted with what has been described as "gothic rock" and folk music, Unknown Rooms was a beuaitful and haunting collection of acoustic songs, while Pain is Beauty and Abyss switched it up by experimenting with electronics and heavy metal.

Memory on Trial is Band Apartes debut album, released on Manifesto Records. They are an LA goth punk duo, releasing hard hitting but mellow tracks with punk, gothic, and synthwave influences throughout them. In the intro track there was an almost German vibe to the song.

Jenny Lee is best known for being the bassist for the band Warpaint, and boy does this record have some freaking dirty bass lines. After hearing the single "never" which I loved, and being a fan of Warpaint, I was definitely excited to hear the entire record. This album incorporates a lot of elements of post punk and new wave which remind me a lot of some of my favorite 80s bands like The Cure and New Order. Her vocals are very moody, dark and dreamy sounding. The song "long lonely winter" is definitely a stand out track for me.

This album goes all over the place. It ranges from shitty synth. pop to solid gothic rock/metal backed with electronic elements to space rock to electronica. The songs seem to be randomly thrown together into an album that has absolutely no cohesion. One song a boring guy will sing, the next the decent woman will. However, the individual songs often work pretty well. I’m a fan of rock, so when it veers off into synth pop or electronica I get left behind. The goth rock and gothic metal segments are great, the pop moments I found boring.
