Avant-garde metal

Zeal & Ardor is fantastic and Devil is Fine completely blew me away, so as soon as I saw this single I knew it was going to be great. And this song did NOT disappoint! "Gravedigger's Chant" is a beautiful song that incorporates piano, drums, and other instruments to create haunting instrumentals. Haunting is the prime word I use to describe Zeal & Ardor's music. It would be a disservice to not mention the heavy influence of black spirtuals, something I had never seen in metal, or any genre for that matter.

I'm going to start this off by saying one thing: BUY THIS ALBUM. The once pure melodic death metal band Avatar has returned with their 7th studio album Avatar Country to tell anyone that they can do whatever the hell they want and still put out an incredible album. Avatar Country is a concept album built on the premise that they are among a land of people who are ruled by a king. This king upholds all the values of the people, hence why each song has "the king" in the title.

From the opening strains of the gospel-inspired a-capella introduction "Effervescent!", you immediately know that Devin Townsend has created yet another masterpiece. Each song has a different identity that is masterfully crafted, executed flawlessly, and equally enjoyable. The lovely vocals of Annekke van Giesbergen are back, but she is not featured as prominently as 2009's 'Addicted'. I hate people who say this, but every song on the album (really) is great.

This may easily be the best album of the year, as per most quality Sigh. Most songs on here are energetic and fast paced melodic black metal filled with avant-garde strangeness and surf rock keyboards. When they aren’t fast paced they’re funky or have eclectic incorporation of other genres. Unfortunately many songs are long, so may take up radio time, but the recommended tracks MUST be played, they are just too awesome to pass up.
