post-punk revival

Interpol

MATADOR RECORDS

Hard-hitting guitar riffs accompanied by gradual, yet syncopated drumming. That is how Interpol has chosen to open their latest album, Marauders. Interpol is a band that I have followed since at least one of their songs was featured during an episode of Fox’s former hit teen soap, The O.C. Their sound back then sounded like a newer take on alternative, and with their latest release Marauders their sound seems to have remained aggressively alternative with some other influences mixed-in.

This album is a bit psychedelic, it's also guitar heavy like the white strips, and has a lot of soul/gospel influence. Overall, it sounds like the white stripes but a distorted, weird version of them. The lyrics are mostly dark, contemplative, and you can tell they have been written by someone who has spent a lot of time on the music scene. The songs have interesting intros and there are a lot of interludes with spoken word.

The Lead singer of Canadian Indie Rock group, "Wolf Parade" sounds like a beautiful marriage between the singing-style of the lead singer of Modest Mouse and a more commanding/risqué singing-style of the lead singer of The Killers.  In other words it starts out gradual and then becomes memorable.  The bands name stands nicely next to this unique singing-style.

Co-songwriter and lead guitarist for the Smiths, Johnny Marr, has come out with his latest album, Playland, to bless the ears of KAMP Student Radio Listeners. I have to say that I couldn't get over how much I enjoyed listening to this album. If you're a fan of the Smiths, you'll definitely experience some nostalgia, but Marr was able to keep the general feel of this album upbeat without losing the common melancholy feel he and Morrissey built together. The songs are each pretty long, but not a moment of this record was wasted.

This is Winchester Revival's first EP. It was not really my style, which means I am no expert. But it felt a little incongruent at times: the vocals didn't really mesh with the instrumentals backing it up. They sound talented enough, like they know what they're doing, but nothing really stood out. It felt like they were trying to reach that post-punk feel like that of the Foals but they never get there (granted there were only 4 songs to go off of).

Images Du Futur is the second album released by Suuns. Although I am not familiar with their previous work, the focus in this album seems to be on the noises and atmospheric quality Suuns can create using guitars and other instruments. Quite frankly, I could not get into this album. However, I lack a technical in background in music which could have helped me appreciate what Suuns was trying to do within this album.
