Neo-Soul

Artist:
Syd
Label:
The Internet / Columbia

Although the neo-soul band The Internet have been pretty quiet this past year, their vocalist Syd the Kyd has not. Syd has since then embarked on a solo-career, simply going by the name Syd. Since then, she has been featured on a numerous amount of other artists' projects, from the likes of Common, Daniel Caesar, Vic Mensa and more, as well as releasing her debut solo studio album.

"Having Everything Revealed" is what the the acronym of R&B artist H.E.R. stands for, and rightfully so. One of the most striking features of H.E.R. is that her identity is shrouded in mystery, with her appearance being completely unknown, as she wants to be only represented by her music and not by how she looks for what she is wearing. Her second EP H.E.R., Vol.

SZA's long-awaited follow up album to her 2014 debut EP "Z", "CTRL" is a vulnerable, dynamic, and honest musical commentary on the singer's growth as both an artist and individual on this 14 track album. "CTRL" boasts features from her fellow TDE colleagues Kendrick Lamar and Isaiah Rashad, rapper Travis Scott, James Fauntleroy, and bits of dialogue from both her mother and grandmother. Every song on this album is an absolute bop!

The original track by Moon Boots is a fun, flirtatious, almost beachy take on classical 90’s techno/house techniques. The track features several rhythmic keys and symbols giving it a continuous floating feeling, making it perfect for a long drive down the coast or a relaxing day by the pool. This song features the vocals of Lulu James a neo-soul British singer. Her incredible vocals give this song an old fashioned, 90’s R&B, feel.

Alongside hip-hop heavyweights Kendrick Lamar and ScHoolboy Q, an extremely underrated female artist by the name of SZA happens to be signed to independent label Top Dawg Entertainment. Somewhere along the lines of neo-soul, alternative R&B, and even hip-hop, Solana Rowe AKA SZA is a very talented young lady who has released 3 excellent EP's, with a studio album titled CTRL which can be released at any given moment. As a huge fan of her work, I was extremely excited when SZA dropped a new single out of the blue.

Andre Akinyele

Andre Akinyele presents an aural experience that has all the energy and vibes of an Erykah Badu or Outkast release, but maintains the more dramatic and clichéd elements of old school R&B and funk. Overall, this The Unauthorized Playlist is an engaging and fun listen, with songs that pay respect to the themes of sex and love that have made R&B so popular with so many listeners.

On September 27th, Solange Knowles, known as simply Solange, surprised fans by tweeting the announcement of her long-awaited third studio album. "I am overwhelmed with gratitude & excitement to share this work I've written and created, with you... #ASeatAtTheTable". Three days later, that excitement was met with the release of A Seat at the Table, earning herself her first number 1 album on the Top Billboard 200. Since 2012's release of her extended play titled True, I have been craving new music from Solange for almost 4 years.

So I'm pretty sure this is a women empowerment music and it's pretty awesome! I didn't know what to expect and Eleanor brings it with her powerful voice. The first song "Hell or Heavan features a rapper and I really like it. The other song that I really like is "My Present". The hook is very catchy and her voice is just working the song. Overall, Eleanor's voice is very old school and soulfull. She works it and you could play any of these songs for a chill session.

Jonathan Emile is a native Jamaican and 2x Grammy nominated recording artist and it really showed in his first studio LP. His music is highly political, but has very good rhymes to show his side of the story. Many of the songs have a reggae feel. Emile has some pull from great rappers like Kendrick Lamar and Murs. The featured rappers and singers that appear on the album add a good flair that compliments Emile greatly.

Jay Dee AKA J Dilla's legend remains as one of the greatest producers of hip hop. Using a drum machine and sampler, he created beats for Busta Rhymes, a Tribe Called Quest, and many other greats. Following his death in 2006, Ma Dukes Yancey took over the management of her son's estate. She has now released 40 tracks from J Dilla's "Batches" with 5 never-before-released tracks.  This set of beats is truly beautiful. The tracks are short, and each one offers something new.
