Thievery Corporation

ESL Music

This album was recorded during a period where the band was staying in Port Antonio, Jamaica, and it immediately shows. This is a standard Thievery Corporation album with heavy reggae influences. The Temple of I and I has the same Thievery Corporaiton loungey ambiance of their prior records, and the dancehall influences make this overwhelmingly chill. If you are a Thievery Corporation fan, you will like this record. Newcomers will probably enjoy it as well, as it is more accessible than some of their prior work.

New York-based singer, Amber Mark, will release her first debut EP on Friday, May 12th. The EP consists of 7 track including two pre-released singles "Lose My Cool" and "Way Back." While listening to both tracks, I immediately thought of my treks through H&M that could also fit the Forever 21 music theme. Lose My Cool is a mellow track with piano at the beginning and end of the track.

This album is just really really beautiful and just simply instrumental and relaxing. The vocals that appear occasionally are just splendid and I love how soulful they are. This feels like less rpm and more singer/songwriter coffee shop music – but better. It’s really hard to explain because this album feels like an experience. With touches of rpm, alt, and world, this album feels relaxing and plays like a beautiful story book. The simple touches of world drums add to the beat and make it more melodic.

Balkan Beat Box is a world-rpm group made up of members from New York and Tel-Aviv. This album is really beautiful and flows together really well. The twelve tracks don't necessarily tell a story but they do blend together in a form of rpm, world, and jazz music. Some songs lean more to the RPM side and others to the world side. The vocals are really clean and beautiful. They are versatile and fit both genres of rpm and world. They range from clean vocal singing to more pop style rapping with rpm backing. This album is hypnotic, groovy, soothing and really just pretty.

Ricky Eat Acid is the solo electronic project of Sam Ray, also of Teen Suicide. His older albums were all variations on lo-fi bedroom electronics, leaning more poppy on Haunt u forever or more ambient like on Three Love Songs. The roughness of recording was a huge part of the charm, and his albums created a hazy atmosphere for you to zone out to.

A very strange and experimental rap album. The fastest paced rapping I have ever hear, if that impresses you and you think you could have hear tighter faster, almost incomprehensible speech rap you should check this out, you will be proven wrong. With lots of this type and style of rap mixed with vintage song tracks of gospel, dishes breaking, rain sounding droplet patterns in the background.

I usually don't listen to politically involved rappers but Semi Hendrix definitely delivers. This rock heavy instrumental definitely accompanies Hendrix's hard flow well. Some memorable quotables include, "If skills sold, truth be told, I oughta be, financially like double Jay-Z" and "Donald Sterling got banned for life, so fuck him and his wife."

The Inspector Cluzo

With an odd combination of progressive rock and 80s hair metal, this French rock duo debuts their fourth EP. Gasconha Rocks is a 10 song, 26 minute album that blends hair metal with traditional rock and roll. Inspector Cluzo reeked of mediocrity and quite honestly seemed overrated. While the vocals a reminiscint of Judas Priest, the rest of the band was bland and lacking creativity. Even the lyrics were boring. If you're into French 80s throwback bands, then the Inspector Cluzo is for you. If not, steer clear because they are just a pointless listen.

Not expecting what to expect when I first picked up this CD. As it was one of the Alt albums that was avalible and had Bassnectar on a track so I thought I'd dive right in. The music that came blaring of my speakers, I could not believe that this was in the Alt section. Being an avid EDM fan, right off the bat it gives you this chill, relaxing and laid-back vibe. But once I started going through each track, around the middle of the album there was some dupstep or dub on a couple of tracks. This shouldnt have surprised me but it did.
