Sludge Metal

The beauty that is Chelsea Wolfe's music is extremely hard to categorize. Her earlier albums such as The Grime and the Glow and Apokalypsis flirted with what has been described as "gothic rock" and folk music, Unknown Rooms was a beuaitful and haunting collection of acoustic songs, while Pain is Beauty and Abyss switched it up by experimenting with electronics and heavy metal.

You like Sepultura? Mudvayne? You like heavy, in your ear, dirty death metal? Well, open your earholes and get stuffed with Superjoint's album, "Caught in the Gears of Application". This album is so heavy, there's only one airable track, and the whole time you're listening, it feels like your ear canal is collapsing in on itself. That isn't wholly a bad thing. if you're into the sludge metal scene, as Superjoint purely presents to us in this album.

Split is the newest EP from both featured bands, Twingiant and Into the Storm which features four songs. The first two songs are performed by Twingiant and the last two are by Into the Storm. I can't say I notice a great difference from each two songs but I would say all sound pretty droning. Which isn't a bad thing because I think all of these songs are pretty good. They're not very engaging and the lyrics are pretty lost on me but I could see myself going to a show and listening to something similar to this EP and just enjoying it.

Fires Within Fires is the 11th studio album from the Post Metal band Neurosis. This is their latest release since their 2012 album Honor Found in Decay. This album features a shoegaze metal style that is both very heavy and ambient all in one. I really enjoyed this album. The heaviness of Scott Kelly's vocals along with the heavy chorus riffs is sure to catch any metalheads attention, especially fans of sluge or doom metal. Being a shoegaze style album, it is expected that it would be pretty long.

Baroness is one of the biggest sludge metal bands out there right now. This genre draws a lot of influence from post punk and alt rock bands which really drew me to this band. I've never been a huge fan of metal but this is a perfect album for people who are not really into the extreme types of metal. This is their fourth full length album. This album is filled with some of their best hooks and melodies. The guy who produced the album has done a lot of stuff with the Flaming Lips which is definitely shown in the psychadelic influence of the record.

The Denver-based, two-piece doom and sludge metal band In The Company Of Serpents has come out with what appears to be their first EP, entitled "Merging in Light". Even though it's only a three-song album, it is a 21 minute listen, mainly because it's just super-sludgy doom metal. Much like a similar album I reviewed earlier this year, Latitude Egress's "To Take Up The Cross" (http://kamp.arizona.edu/node/4141), it is not what I would've typically picked up. That being said, it was a very satisfying listen.

This is some heavy stuff,  these guys just basically slam power chords for the entire 4 song, 30 min duration. The depressing, doomish vibe really gets the listener involved in the tone, creating an almost misanthropic and hopelessness atmosphere. Most of this record is very.... very slow, and quite boring if you're into high tempo stuff. But this doom metal album leaves a mark on you, inserting a type of depression into your mind that releases mixed feelings about the world around you.

Neurosis is one of those bands that I feel like I should listen to more, but don't. My only other exposure to them is 2007's critically-acclaimed "Given to the Rising" and Scott Kelly's guest vocal work with Mastodon. There are only 3 songs between 6 and 8 minutes long, and the rest of the album is long, slow, and heavy. Kelly's gritty vocals and dark, poetic lyrics are the highlight of this album. I feel like they'd be a hell of a band to see live.

The first single from Red Fang's new album is fast, heavy, and somewhat trippy and unsettling. Their last album, "Murder the Mountains," reminded me of early Mastodon A LOT, and this song is no exception. It sounds like a song that could have been written in transition between Leviathan and Blood Mountain. So if you've been disappointed by Mastodon's last 2 albums, please check these guys out.

The latest offering from Phil Anselmo and Pepper Keenan is the first of a scheduled four EP's to be released, and if the next three are anything like this, then I can't wait until the day where I can sit down and listen to all four back-to-back. Now I understand why Keenan was absent on Corrosion of Conformity's latest album: he was too busy getting this gem together. Play it!
