Kasbo

Foreign Family Collective/Counter Records

All I gotta say is this album by Kasbo is all you need for a bad day or for a great day. It's very versatile and is downright beautiful and a blessing to your ears. It has everything you could ever want or need in a RPM album by the Foreign Family Collective. It's got good beats here and there, I gotta admit there are some cases where the beats and lyrics in some songs sound a little mainstream, but you might not think so. Give it a listen and see if you like it.

If y'all know me at all, you know that I'm the biggest sucker on the planet for two things: spacey-sounding stuff and anything from the '80s (heck, I drive an '83 280ZX, so I'm kind of a retro-junky. Yes, the '80s qualify at retro now, I'm so sorry). Toro Y Moi starts "Boo Boo" out just right for me, and anyone that feels the same about what I just said is more than welcome to jump right in!

His mother and father were pastors, but Palmistry saw himself as a pagan; and that's the tale behind this album. The soft, chilly world in Palmistry's debut LP is certainly unlike anything that I'm used to listening to, but I found myself to be pleasantly surprised the more I listened. "Club Aso" introduces the minimalistic style of the album, and the song's melancholy plucks, layered beneath Palmistry's voice (which reminded me of a chill version of The Weeknd), creates a sense of intimacy with listeners...maybe even create a familiar atmosphere for some.

This album should be added to your list of study music ASAP. The album is 75 minutes of pure concentration. While listening to this album I finished 5 projects in three hours which if your in college you know, that never happens. Christian Loeffler explained that the recording process took place in cabin looking out to the shores of the Baltic Sea, setting the Mare Mood and creating a theme and title for the album. This music consists of soft synths, violin, percussion and sparingly soft vocals sung by Monha.

Grasque is Choir of Young Believers third studio album and shows a lot of potential. The album is a mix of music styles influencesd by english, danish, and even greek art. The foundation of album plays off of chillwave, bedroom pop where you can feel the laptop glow mixed with the piano and down-tempo spymphonics. The one complaint I have about the album is everything sounded somewhat the same, I had no idea when a track transitioned to the next, and it all seems like a blur. There wasn't anything memorable about it.

VEGA INTL. Night School is Neon Indian's third album, and it feels much more cohesive than the previous two efforts. Night School is sleazy, swirly, funky synthpop, where fuzzy vocals are hidden behind pulsing bass. The album gives me part-retro Tron vibespart-80's Miami nightclub vibes in the best possible way. Neon Indian upped the production values on Night School without sacrificing the fuzzy blurriness that gives Neon Indian its appeal. Play it on your show!

Local Tucson artist Dylan Browne reportedly recorded this album while watching endless Parks & Recreation and The Eric Andre Show, and given the slapstick or chaotic nature of the humor featured in both those shows, its difficult to ascertain exactly how he found inspiration from those sources. His fourth album, and first under California based net-label Galaxy Swim Team, follows the label's matra of "Digital & Electronic art aimed at evoking long past feelings of youthful ignorance, and nostalgia through sounds" to a t.

I'd say there is more than meets the eye in this release. Your basic guesses from judging the cover would probably be similar to mine: the washed out grainy pastel spoke of something indie and sweet, and the Danger inspired pyramid with text indicated something futuristically synthy. This, however correct, was cursory and lazy. Loveskills is a chillwave artist who incorporates elements of house music and hip-hop into his songs.

As a college student, chill yet upbeat music that lack overpowering vocals is a sweet spot (at least for me it is) when I'm studying or doing homework. It's engaging and inspiring without it being cluttered or loud. And let's face it, sometimes vocals get really annoying when you're trying to read that last paragraph that you're struggling with. So thank you, Conrad Clifton, for putting together the ultimate "get things done" album that is literally music to my ears.

Another great album from Brothertiger, but nothing incredibly innovative or out there. They effectively create yet another playlist to chillax to the max to. Like most music from this genre, each song sounds more or less the same and works to create a fantastic mood for studying, hanging out in your room, or commuting to school/work. The album starts off slow and gets a increasingly more upbeat towards the middle, which serves as a nice progression. I think they had the perfect balance of ambient and upbeat songs.
