The Third Eye Centre

Artist:
Belle & Sebastian
Label:
Jeepster Records

Belle & Sebastian’s playful pop-alt has a childlike quality with a bit of nostalgia for the 60s. At least, that’s what I get out of it. Something about their elevator music coolness and lazy Sunday chill reminds me of Wes Anderson. Easy listening with a hint of tribal/ banging random instruments/ surf. Every song is so different than the song before. It’s a long album, and it’s worth the listen from beginning to end.

Persona Non Grata

Artist:
Cosmonauts
Label:
Burger records

The Cosmonauts are a band with some very psychedelic vibes. It is tambourine and that instrument that is usually associated with psy music. I feel like this has a cross of neutral milk hotel and the Beatles yellow submarine album. I would also say it same some essence of surf rock in some of the songs. Overall a great album to listen to while doing some homework late one night.

Ride Your Heart

Artist:
Bleached
Label:
Dead Oceans

Two sisters, Jennifer and Jessie Clavin, make up this LA band called Bleached. One defining characteristic of Bleached is their heart-felt, punky, beachy, cool lyrics and sound. While the lyrics are simple to understand, they are also very relatable. If you actually listen to them, you'll notice that practically every song is regarding their frustration with relationships. As mellow as they may sound, there is also some major attitude (think Joan Jett) behind their vocals.

Polite Men

Artist:
The Buttercream Gang
Label:
Pitted Records

I chose this album originally because I thought the band name was funny being named after a low budget film I remember from my youth.  While the band has some catchy lyrics and instrumentation,  the album is very repetitive and there aren't any really unique standout tracks.  This band is from San Francisco so you can hear the beach boy beach sound influence that can be relaxing and catchy.

Udachi featuring Nani Castle
Label:
Party Like Us

Ukranian born NYC based dj Udachi (Greg Pesochin) give us this bass heavy/dubby release on AC Slater's Party Like Us Label.  With vocals by New York City based vocalist Nani Castle.  First track: dark slow psychadelic intro builds, beat comes in with  seductive voacals, then it goes crazy with futuristic sounds and beat changes.  It's a fun song.  Play it.  The second track is the "Intergalactic Dub" mix of the first.  It's a fitting description and it does not feature vocals.  Imagine the music you would hear inside a scary mansion in space.  Th

The Dark Side Of The Moon

Are you feeling well?  Because if you're not, you should put this CD on, and just take a nap for 40 minutes.  Your listeners won't be disappointed.

This is a cover album of maybe one of the 100 greatest albums of all time, Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon, and dear god, is it beautiful.  Just like its predacessor, it was clearly meant to be played in sequence as a seamless whole, but any song can also be played by itself to great acclaim.

Once again, the co-originators of the now-defunct Elephant 6 Collective have continued to amaze its fans. Although their previous album "New Magnetic Wonder" had a few hits and misses, this one is a solid gem (although both do sound similar, as this album is a further exploration into frontman Robert Schneider's love for Electric Light Orchestra). Compared though to New Magnetic Wonder, this recent collection of tracks sound more matrue and well-developed from a lyrical perspective.
