Belly of the Beast by Citizen Kay is really funky. Citizen Kay, a rapper from Australia first caught public attention with his debut EP Demokracy. The music has jazz, blues and rock influences. However, a lot of the music is electronic. He has some cool keyboard riffs on his album. It is actually super refreshing to listen to. Seriously, this guy has talent. Citizen Kay’s raps are smooth, with a hint of 90’s retro sound. The album kind of sounds like Lamar's earlier To Pimp a Butterfly, but a lot less explicit and more rock influenced.

Hop Along is an indie-alternative band hailing from Pennsylvania with their third album, Bark Your Head Off, Dog. For starters lead singer Frances Quinlan has one of the most unique and mesmerizing voices that I have heard in a while. It has a certain raspiness to it that makes her vocal performance on this album vulnerable when it needs to be, and assertive and kick-ass when the time calls. Another aspect about her voice that I greatly appreciated was the fact that it never got to the point of absurdity.

Katie Frank is a singer-songwriter from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania that recently released her first full length album “All You’ll Get From Greed”. Her style is easy to listen to pop-rock. Her sound reminds me of a generic track that you could find on Radio Disney. That is to say, this album is very beige. While listening to this album, I zoned out and went from track 2 to track 7 without noticing that I had been listening to an album. The instrumental performances are somewhat lackluster and unimaginative.

Jackson MacIntosh is a singer song writer who recorded the majority of his latest album at the Drones Club in Montreal. MacIntosh blends the sytles of indie rock and 60s/70s pop rock together in order to create the sound of this album, "My Dark Side". Think of it as The Shins meets the Beatles (White Album). Although the album is generally warm, which surprised me due to the album art and the title of the album, I find it quite bland and unmemorable.

After a brief hiatus from his last LP, Ozy Reigns has come out with the wide-ranging, EP, "Sunborn". Reigns states the EP is "a dedication to all who strive to live their dreams", as the EP works to inspire the struggles of the hustlers and dreamers around the world. It's demonstrated with the EP's alternative hip-hop vibes, perhaps straying from the mainstream, but more personal and meaningful for the audiences who are listening.

In Nick Heyward’s new album, "Woodland Echoes" he gives listeners a sound that creates an uplifting new take on classic sounds that have various instruments with an indie vibe to it. In his song "Mountain Top", Heyward’s voice resembles closely to that of Paul McCartney with an uppity pop guitar sound that mixes well along with a perfect country fiddle solo that makes you feel like you’re listening to a classic rock song released in the 60s.

Kobra and the Lotus is a female fronted metal band (lead singer Kobra Paige). Their third album, High Priestess, rocked hard - I downloaded it to my iPod. Their EP Words of the Prophet was good too. Now the seven year old band is working on a new album I, Prevail expected to come out later this year. This is the single for that album and "You Don't Know" is definitely a different path for this band. They've progressively gotten softer and softer in terms of music. The vocals have always been clean, Paige never screamed or growled.

This album is delightfully layered taking influences from old classical violin rifts and combining middle eastern drum anesthetics, paired with an almost opera quality style male singer. Arian Saleh is a distinctive singer song writer and composer. This album took me by surprise. After peering at the lyrics I was assuming that I had gotten myself involved with a whiney type of male singer who would make sad angst indie type music bordering on boy band status. I was completely wrong.

At first listen, Cala Vento’s album Fruto Panorama comes across as a Latino alternative band with some poppy songs.  However, the album goes beyond the surface of abstract hipster imagery into the hopes, dreams, and pain of the group. In the song “En Cueros”, the artists juxtapose cameras (possibly social media) and people hiding to state the desire the singer has for the object of their affection. Fruto Panorama is a cross between the abstraction of Modest Mouse and the softness melodies of Two Door Cinema Club.
