Magnetron Music

Sofie Winterson hails from Amsterdam, and is still fairly new on the music scene.
Her newest release, a three-song EP entitled KIDS, is pretty good. The songs
have a lot of synth-based layers of instrumentation, resulting in an ethereal vibe.
I think that it is good background music; I could see it playing in a hip coffee shop
or an overpriced boutique. Unfortunately, it's not anything I would crave to hear over and over

Lola Marsh’s EP “You’re Mine” is a beautiful, open sounding collection of four songs. This due from Tel Aviv creates ethereal beats and soaring choruses that are truly wonderful. The title track, “You’re Mine” stands out immediately, but all of the tracks are very good. “Sirens” sounds like it could be in a western while the cowboys are riding off into the distance. This song was their first single, and it immediately caught listener’s attention and put them on the map.

Tacocat’s newest album Lost Time is kind of what you expect from Tacocat which is some good catchy pop punk. There are some songs that really kick ass on this album like I Hate the Weekend and You Can’t Fire Me, I Quit.  But then there are some songs I really didn’t like at all like Plan A, Plan B, which was just not catchy and too fast. And there were other tracks like Talk that just felt like filler because it didn’t really make an impact on me at all. So to conclude this yeah there are some good tracks but then there are some that are just ehhhhhhh.

Bleached are an all girl pop rock trio that kicks ass and their newest album Welcome the Worms does not disappoint. This album is full of energy and catchy lyrics all the way through the album. So if you are into music made by three chicks that shred and make some catchy ass songs I think this album is for you. On this album there are a few songs that really really good like: Keep on Keepin’ On and Wasted on You. So if you haven’t listened to them before you should listen to those two tracks and I promise you that you will get hooked.

This new single from STRFKR is their first release in three years, and it sounds like STRFKR--but don't mistake my tone for jaded. This track is bubbly and infectious, with a groovy bass line and fun synth melodies. It simply reminisces the late twentieth century from which disco pop originates, rather than trying to imitate it, which keeps it palatable. It's not the most artistically deep or technically prolific track of 2016, but it's fun as hell.

M. Maggie Miller's Vienna Genesis was a really good album. All of the songs quite poppy and reminiscent of other artists I've reviewed in the past. The first song, "Fire on the Sun" sounded a lot like Lena Fayre with a few similarities to some of Lorde's Pure Heroine soundtracks. It was pretty simplistic and chanty but I really enjoyed it. I wouldn't rock out to it, because it was a lot more lowkey than most of the other songs.

Aurora stunned the world with her song featured on the 2015 John Lewis Christmas advert, "Half the World Away", bringing nearly everyone who watched it to tears. Little did I know this was just a warm-up for her debut album, All My Demons Greeting Me As A Friend, an album which expands the artist's scope and demonstrates her ability to create vast soundscapes.

This album is one of the most cohesive and polished albums to come out of the Chilean indie pop scene in a while. It’s been a while since ASTRO, one of the original proponents of this indie pop movement, has put out an album (their last was released in 2012), but Chicos de la Luz was well worth the wait. This album is very synth-heavy, just like the previous two, but the band’s sound has developed a great deal and the melodies and lyrics are much more complex. The imagery and lyrical descriptions in the album are incredible.

Miike Snow’s third album, iii, produces some radio hits and some duds. Miike Snow is a Swedish indie pop trio, and the three men are back with their third album. An immediate standout on the album is “Genghis Khan”, exemplifying the struggle of casually seeing someone, but not wanting them to be casually seeing anyone else. The song is top-40 ready, and packs a good punch- the synths and percussion are at their best on this song. Another well produced song on the album is “Back of the Car”, with a good beat and driving piano that keeps the song alive.

Opus Orange has a put out a great album with Anatomic. The entire album has a very Phoenix/Passion Pit sound to it, blending together electronic and guitar sounds to create an even balance. Their lead singer has a voice that reminds me of Mark Foster from Foster the People, with the large range and crisp vocals. , Stylistically the songs also remind me of those by Foster the People, due to the vocals and the emphasis on the electronic backing.
