Indie Pop

Artist:
Kings of Leon
Label:
RCA Records

Remember in middle school when Kings of Leon released hits like "Sex is on Fire"? Well, they're still making music and they haven't changed too much from the sound they had back then. I wasn't too impressed with this album to be honest because it felt a bit haphazard in terms of style, one second I was listening to indie pop and the next second I was listening to country-based alternative. "Waste a Moment" is a fast-paced song that has instrumentals that are exciting enough to distract you from the weird lyrics of the song.

Saint Motel released their new album, saintmotelevision, a couple weeks ago and I was immediately drawn to the new music. I listened to their single, Move, and was definitely impressed, though it did remind of their big hit, My Type. Once the album was released, I took a deeper look and I couldn’t have been happier. “Getaway” has that punchy synth that I look for in any song, and it does not disappoint. “Destroyer” is groovy and fun, a little more edgy than the other indie pop jams.

Cate Le Bon is a Welsh singer-songwriter but now resides in Los Angeles. This is her fourth record and the follow up to her very well received record Mug Muesem, which included an apperance from Perfume Genius. Her voice is beautiful yet haunting at the same time. Her music has influences coming from 60s pop and 80s post punk. It definitely has pretty chill psychedelic vibe. For sure give this a listen.

Jenn Wasner is best known for being the lead singer and guitarist for Wye Oak. She is touring in support of her first solo album If You See Me, Say Yes, under the name Flock of Dimes. She will actually be in Tucson Saturday at 191 Toole with Your Friend. Her new record is very reminiscent of 80s synth pop. Although not as folk inspired as that of Wye Oak, Wasner's vocal are still just as dreamy as ever.

I had never heard of Babeheaven before I listened to their debut short four song EP. It was everything I could have hoped for. Babeheaven has a perfect combination of influences. The lead singer has a really good almost soulful voice. This combined with some very 90s sounding beats, dreamy guitars and synths, and a groovy bass line. There is not a bad song in this EP.

Royal Canoe is a Canadian alternative ensemble from Winnipeg, Manitoba. They have had a few EPs and previously released Today We're Believers making this their second full-fledged album. Something Lost Between Here and the Orbit is a unique jam, not sure how to describe it as it has a mix of musical influence. The band isn't afraid to use unique, different musical instruments/sounds, but oddly it works out for their own cool charm and style. The album starts off with a house, off beat jam with cheery-candid vocals and some neat percussion.

1995 is a short EP by Phoenix-based musician Doomed To Bloom. It consists of two original songs, one cover of a Taylor Swift song, and two alternate, synth-based versions of the original songs. The release is fairly straightforward indie pop and musically it consists of densely layered guitar, synthesizer, and drum tracks underneath mellow lyrics. I enjoy the vocal delivery on the album and the lyrics are surprisingly good for a self-released EP. My one largest complaint with the release is that I think some of it is poorly mixed, most noticably on the song Yr Landslide.

This album is one of the best I have heard. I definetly enjoined all the songs! The music gets stuck in your head--but not the bad kind of stuck in your head, more like humming the tunes, bobbing your head to the drums or plucking your air guitar while strolling down the street kind of stuck in your head. The music is nice and smoothing with a bit of cosmic flare-- something nice to play while studying  or have running in the background.

Diner’s two new songs “Fifteen on a Skateboard” and “Plastic Cactus” are exactly what you expect to hear from Diners. Although that can kind of sound like a bad thing it really isn’t. Well, at least to me it isn’t. What I mean is that if you like Diners you will at a minimum think these songs are decent, which is exactly what I thought when listening to it. The first song “Fifteen on a Skateboard” is one of the weaker Diner tracks that I have heard.
