Indie Pop

Artist:
Spoon
Label:
Matador Records

Spoon is back with the title track off their upcoming album Hot Thoughts and they are back on the legendary indie label Matador Records.  This single really has some dance grooves on it. It seems like whenever Spoon goes for a new sound they don't dissapoint. The beat and hook to this track are very catchy and it really makes me excited to hear the full length record, which will be out March 17th.

The xx are known for a slower, more guitar and bass driven vibe. In their new album, I See You, The xx take their well known genre of indie pop and modern r&b and incorporate all of the members best qualities into an album that is sure to draw you in. The album begis with a start like their other albums then begins to take on a more pop and electronic feel. Instead of a slower and more chill vibe, the new album has lots of opportunites to jam and get into the songs.

Forth Wanderers

On their Slop EP, New Jersey-based indie pop outfit Forth Wanderers deliver some nice, catchy, downtempo music that's chock full of layered guitars and catchy melodies. The vocals on the album are really clear and well-produced, albeit they do often sound like typical female indie vocals. None of the songs on this EP are particularly exciting, or convey any sense of urgency, but they're all nice and fun and laid back. Most of the songs possess distorted rhythm guitars in the background, with a nice, clean guitar played overtop of it.

This album is SO PRETTY. The vocals are goregeous and it's kind of a slow Lumineers sound, with similarities to Of Monsters and Men. The album is beautifully produced, and each of the songs are goregeous in their own way. The entire album I was shocked with how goregeous the vocals and vocals were. The songs are slower for the most part, with less focus on upbeat choirs. Track 4, On and On is slower but also has a beautiful chorus and is beautiful to listen to while studying, or trying to relax. This entire abum is beautiful, and its hard to go wrong with any of the tracks.

Grant Eadie, better know as Manatee Commune is a very talented electronic artist out of Seatlle, Washington. His music is similar to Slow Magic and Giraffage because of its chill vibe, clean production, and pretty arpeggios and high plucks. This song in particular is Manatee Commune's remix of his own original where he brings out fellow Seatlle artist SOL to rap over a remixed version of his original track. This track has everything you'd want out of a chill vibed electronic song.

Remember in middle school when Kings of Leon released hits like "Sex is on Fire"? Well, they're still making music and they haven't changed too much from the sound they had back then. I wasn't too impressed with this album to be honest because it felt a bit haphazard in terms of style, one second I was listening to indie pop and the next second I was listening to country-based alternative. "Waste a Moment" is a fast-paced song that has instrumentals that are exciting enough to distract you from the weird lyrics of the song.

Saint Motel released their new album, saintmotelevision, a couple weeks ago and I was immediately drawn to the new music. I listened to their single, Move, and was definitely impressed, though it did remind of their big hit, My Type. Once the album was released, I took a deeper look and I couldn’t have been happier. “Getaway” has that punchy synth that I look for in any song, and it does not disappoint. “Destroyer” is groovy and fun, a little more edgy than the other indie pop jams.

Cate Le Bon is a Welsh singer-songwriter but now resides in Los Angeles. This is her fourth record and the follow up to her very well received record Mug Muesem, which included an apperance from Perfume Genius. Her voice is beautiful yet haunting at the same time. Her music has influences coming from 60s pop and 80s post punk. It definitely has pretty chill psychedelic vibe. For sure give this a listen.

Jenn Wasner is best known for being the lead singer and guitarist for Wye Oak. She is touring in support of her first solo album If You See Me, Say Yes, under the name Flock of Dimes. She will actually be in Tucson Saturday at 191 Toole with Your Friend. Her new record is very reminiscent of 80s synth pop. Although not as folk inspired as that of Wye Oak, Wasner's vocal are still just as dreamy as ever.

I had never heard of Babeheaven before I listened to their debut short four song EP. It was everything I could have hoped for. Babeheaven has a perfect combination of influences. The lead singer has a really good almost soulful voice. This combined with some very 90s sounding beats, dreamy guitars and synths, and a groovy bass line. There is not a bad song in this EP.
