Hard Rock

Red Sun Rising's new album Thread is a playful, energetic play on the modern alternative rock that is being played. The whole album plays with upbeat on beat measures and mixes them with off tempo, minor key choruses. This whole album screamed "Summer of My Senior Year" or some other sappy teeny bopper movie. This album feels fun and carefree in the most mature way possible. The vocalist, Mike Protich, brings energy and enthusiasm that would lacking without his vocals. My favorite thing about this album is that it is catchy like pop but sincere, unlike most pop.

This single is a new release from the band Kobra and the Lotus. Their 5th album, Prevail II comes out later this month on April 27th. They are a hard rock/metal band with a classical female singer, they sound similar to Epica to me.

Did somebody say "party"? No? Well, Andrew W.K. definitely did. For example, the lyrics of the first song, "The Power of Partying", is composed of only the word "partying." What this album lacks in seriousness it makes up with feel good vibes and music. Andrew W.K. is genuinely a fun guy who oozes positivity and this album similarly reflects the creator's personality.

Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons
Label:
Nuclear Blast Records

Phil Campbell and the Bastard Songs put out a full length album called the Age of Absurdity. This is a pretty standard hard rock album, with some heavy hitting drums and over the top guitar riffs. The lead singer Phil Campbell is the ex-guitarist for Motorhead and brings that momentum over to his side project. This had the expertise and the beautiful quality of a Motorhead track but loses some of its strength in the singing. The sound evolves and grows as the album does, but it never really blows me away.

The new single from Phoenix-based band, Murkocet, "Hustlin' Hate" is a heavy hitting song. Intense guitars lead the way on this track and balance the muted and muddled double bass from the drums. The vocals are intense and deep throated but nothing too intense. This track is a really good jam song and really pumps you up. While the drumming is a bit muted, its really well done and sounds complimentary next to the guitars. Murkocet is not too heavy so this track is perfect for all kinds of metal shows. They remind me of Five Finger Death Punch but with a flair of Avatar.
