Ali Shareef, Hip Hop Music Director

While this year has been generally a shitstorm, it's been pretty big for hip-hop. From Chance's debut album, to ATCQ's last it's been a wild ride (and it's not quite over). In no particular order here are my Top 10 Hip-Hop albums of the year.

1. Blonde - Frank Ocean

While I said this list isn't in any order, I think Blonde is absolutely the best album to come out of 2016. From the very first beats of Nikes to the distorted clips in Futura Free, Frank Ocean gave us an amazing album.

"You cut your hair but you used to live a blonded life, Wish I was there, wish we had grown up on the same advice" - Self Control

2. The Life of Pablo - Kanye West

It's been an interesting year for Kanye to say the least. One of my favorite things about Pablo was being there to witness the evolution of the album; the first leak is really different from what it is now, and thanks to Kanye for that journey.

"I just wanna feel liberated, I, I..." - Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1

3. Coloring Book - Chance the Rapper

This was such a fun album, perfect for the summer, and featured some great artists. Coloring Book is just a great amalgamation of what good hip-hop is.

"Music all we got, got, got

So we might as well give it all we got" - All We Got

4. untitled unmastered. - Kendrick Lamar

untitled unmastered was really surprising and mysterious. To me it feels almost like an extension of TPAB with some really heavy lyrics. Also Kendrick has been amazing in features all throughout the year, so thanks Kendrick.

"Why you wanna see a good man with a broken heart?" - untitled 05 | 09.21.2014

5. Prima Donna EP- Vince Staples

Lyrics, beats, flow, an Andre 3000 feature; this short EP has it all covered. A really strong album from Vince Staples and an amazing accompanying visual medley of the album.

"A wise man once said that a black man better off dead

So I'm, war ready" - War Ready

6. Malibu - Anderson .Paak

Malibu shows off Anderson .Paaks incredibly smooth sounds and soulful style so well. There's funk, there's soul, there's RnB with .Paak sliding over the tracks with ease. It's just so chill.

"Hey, I never wanna waste your time, my life

So precious, is yours, is mine" - Am I Wrong

7. I'M UUUGLY- Duckwrth

Not sure if anyone will agree with me on this one, but ya'll slept on Duckwrth. I enjoyed this album so much, but didn't hear too much buzz around it. I'M UUUGLY has some really diverse sounds from the very smooth "Rare Panther" to the banger "BLAKK RAGER". Check it out.

"Let's do something we haven't done before

There's a whole world we have yet to explore

Let's get ugly" - GET UUUGLY

8. Blank Face LP - Schoolboy Q

Blank Face was loaded with some amazing catchy tracks, some great features, and gangsta raps. Not much more I can say, Blank Face speaks for itself, just a hella solid 2016 album.

"Me no conversate with the fake, that part

All my bitches independent bitches, that part" - THat Part

9. JEFFERY- Young Thug

Another really fun album. Thugger has one of those artistic styles you laugh at, but at the same time you can bump to. From his pretty accurate Future imitation on "Future Swag" to his belting singing voice on "Webbie"JEFFERY is a happy high point of 2016. (Please check out the album art of JEFFERY if you haven't already).

"I got 70,000 for my last 30 shows (do the math)

I done spend a half a million for my family though." - RiRi

10. We got it from Here...Thank You 4 Your service - A Tribe Called Quest

Here we are at ATCQ's last album. With Phife Dawg's (RIP) death earlier this year, I don't think many people were expecting another Tribe album. But we got it, and Phife is on it, and it's everything I could have of hoped for. If there's any album on this list you should listen to, I'd recommend this one. It's incredibly strong and has that certain something that 2016 needed, if that makes sense.

"Rip every stage with grace, look right dead in they face,

Live the Tribe principle of havin’ impeccable taste.

Enjoy that breath like that one was your last one left,

If you don’t believe me, there’s truly life after death." - Black Spasmodic

There's a lot more I wanted to do, but that wouldn't be a Top 10. I do want to do some honorable mentions.

Gucci Mane- While I don't think he had a Top 10 album, be was definitely a Top 10 artist of 2016, a huge year for Gucci, and it's not over yet.

Childish Gambino- Great album, would've loved to hear some bars although.

Roy Wood$- s/o to Brieana for showing me this, super dope

Belly- InZombia was dope

Travis Scott- BITTSM

Rich Chigga- the realest

Danny Brown- This almost made my Top 10!

The Weeknd- Starboy is great

Meek Mill- May have taken some L's but DC4 was a W.

Migos (espeically Quavo)- some fun shit, and Quavo was on fire with the features.

Riff Raff- BALLOWEEN

+RTJ, Post Malone, Drake, Rae Sremmurd, Logic, YG

(I've probs missed a lot, but thanks 2016 for Hip-Hop at least!)
